The decisive difference

Steaming instead of soaking

Soaking costs water, time and some of the hay's nutrients – without reliably reducing germs. Steaming with BEGA combines hygienic hay with low nutrient loss (versus soaking, per manufacturer).

Soaking

  • Washes water-soluble nutrients and sugars out of the hay.
  • Bacteria and mould spores are usually not killed but only partly diluted.
  • Wet hay can ferment rapidly and must be fed promptly.
  • High water consumption and effortful disposal of the waste water.

  • What is a hay steamer and how does it work?

    A hay steamer is a stainless-steel appliance that heats hay to 85–93 °C using hot water steam. The steam flows through the hay, kills a large share of the contained bacteria and mould spores (98–99 % bacterial reduction and near-complete mould reduction in studies, Moore-Colyer 2016) and binds inhalable dust. Unlike soaking, sugars and nutrients are barely washed out – the hay stays aromatic and largely retains its feed value.

  • Does a hay steamer help with cough, mucus and nasal discharge?

    Steamed hay contains substantially less dust and fewer mould spores than dry hay. What matters is not the raw runtime but that the target temperature (85–93 °C) is reached and held sufficiently directly in the hay – ensured at BEGA by two temperature sensors and the freely adjustable main steaming time.

  • How do I clean a hay steamer?

    BEGA hay steamers are made entirely of stainless steel and can be wiped down with hot water and mild detergent; removable components can be cleaned separately. The water reservoir and drain should be descaled and emptied regularly – the frequency depends on water hardness and usage intensity. Specific cleaning intervals per model are given in the operating instructions.
