Indoor or Outdoor Horse Stall: Pros and Cons Compared

Neither an indoor stall nor an outdoor stall is fundamentally "the better" solution — the right choice depends on which of five factors matters most in your situation: weather protection and climate, cost over the stall’s service life, maintenance, social contact between horses, and mobility or resale. 1. Pros and cons at a glance

Indoor stall

  • Weather protection included: the roof, floor and outer walls are provided by the building — the stall itself needs no weatherproof shell of its own.
  • Less extra effort where a building already exists: with a suitable stable already in place, no separate foundation or roof is needed for the stall.
  • Sheltered location: exterior surfaces are less exposed to direct weather than with a free-standing unit.
  • Permanent integration: a stall structure durably built into the building, with a corresponding value contribution to the property.
  • No suitable building, no option: without an existing or newly built stable, an indoor stall is not achievable, or requires new construction.
  • Daylight depends on the building: how much natural light the stall gets depends on the building's window and skylight design, not on the stall itself.
  • Fixed in place: relocating it later means dismantling and re-installing the front wall and partitions, not "moving" the unit.

Outdoor stall

  • No building required: stands independently at the paddock, in the yard or directly at pasture.
  • Own, compliant weather protection: the roof structure with overhang protects against rain, wind and sun.
  • Pasture-edge location: can in practice offer more incidental visual contact with other horses.
  • Relocatable later: in the mobile chassis version with a hydraulic axle.
  • Own ground required: a level, load-bearing site, potentially with a foundation, is a prerequisite.
  • More direct weather exposure: exterior surfaces likely need cleaning and inspection more often than a building-sheltered indoor stall.
  • Building permit depends on context: depends on canton, municipality, location and land-use zone.

2. Climate and weather protection

On minimum dimensions, the Animal Welfare Ordinance (TSchV) makes no distinction between indoor and outdoor stalls — the same Table 7, by wither height, applies to both types (see our dimensions guide for the full figures). What differs is not the dimension, but who supplies the weather protection.

For animals kept permanently outdoors, the TSchV (Art. 36) requires suitable natural or artificial shelter that gives all animals space at the same time and protects against rain, wind and strong sun, plus a sufficiently dry lying area. For an outdoor stall, its own roof structure fulfils that role — lean-to, gable, or Texas corrugated-sheet roof with overhang. For an indoor stall, the building provides it instead.

Light and indoor climate are not differentiated by construction type under the TSchV either: rooms where animals stay predominantly must be lit by daylight, with at least 15 lux during the day outside retreat areas (Art. 33), and a climate suited to the animals must prevail — where ventilation is artificial, fresh-air supply must remain assured even if the system fails (Art. 11). Both requirements apply regardless of stall type; whether an outdoor stall gets more daylight in practice depends on its specific placement, not on a legal distinction.

3. Cost over the service life

An outdoor stall needs its own level, load-bearing ground, often with a foundation — an effort that comes on top of the stall itself. An indoor stall, by contrast, uses an existing or newly built stable: the roof, floor and outer walls are already there or part of the construction project, and the stall itself consists only of a front wall, partitions and a door.

  • Foundation and ground: its own cost item for the outdoor stall, covered by the building for the indoor stall.
  • Use of the building or new-build obligation: an indoor stall requires a suitable building — if none exists, a conversion or new build becomes necessary.
  • Extensibility: an additional partition and front wall per stall for the indoor stall; a dedicated add-on module for the outdoor stall.
  • Building permit: needs clarifying for both types, depending on canton, municipality and land-use zone — usually a change of use or renovation for an indoor stall, a new installation for an outdoor stall.

4. Maintenance and weather influence

The material standard is the same regardless of construction type: every indoor-stall range in the catalogue is made from galvanised steel, with the Excellent range hot-dip galvanised — corrosion protection suited to daily stable use.

An outdoor stall is more directly exposed to the weather than an indoor stall sheltered by the building. That suggests an outdoor stall's exterior surfaces likely need cleaning or inspecting for weather damage more often than a building-sheltered indoor stall — a plausible, general observation, not a fixed maintenance interval or a manufacturer specification.

5. Social contact and horse behaviour

How much visual contact exists between neighbouring horses depends on the partition option chosen — "grille on top", "closed for 1 m", "closed for 2 × 1 m" or "fully closed" — and is therefore primarily a configuration choice, not a difference between indoor and outdoor stalls: both types offer the same partition options.

Independent of that configuration, an outdoor stall is typically sited at the edge of a paddock or pasture, often within sight of other horses at pasture. That can, in practice, mean more incidental herd contact than an indoor stall in a closed stable row. This is a general observation about animal behaviour, not a TSchV requirement — the ordinance sets no rule differentiated by construction type here.

6. Mobility and resale

The mobile outdoor stall in the catalogue shows that an outdoor stall can genuinely change location: a galvanised chassis for a 4 × 3 m outdoor stall, a hydraulic axle operable by hand pump, and one fixed axle with two wheels allow the unit to be relocated later (the stall unit itself, lighting, hay rack, water trough and rubber flooring are available separately).

An indoor stall, by contrast, is fixed permanently to the building: the front wall and partitions are installed, not mounted on a chassis. That is an advantage for permanent integration and adding value to the building, but a drawback if the stall later needs to move — relocating it means dismantling and re-installing, not moving the unit.

7. The combination: when both make sense

Indoor and outdoor stalls are not mutually exclusive: a riding facility can run outdoor stalls at the paddock during the day and indoor stalls in the main stable at night — a common setup in the catalogue, planned as one project, not two separate purchases.
